ARTIST STATEMENT
Peet Massé

For some time now, I have been elaborating a research method that would lead to new ways of developing the subjects in my art. Though my work remains narrative, questioning issues sincerely, the focus is more on the research process rather than the issues themselves. As the work’s genesis is implicit to analysing the final result, I decided to make the link explicit to induce imagery. I now use two key elements as both research tools and genesis tracks simultaneously. They are recurrent throughout the corpus of my work and thus provide the main theoretical and aesthetic structure of my art.  Here is a brief description of their distinctive roles:

Mr. Gustin

As a convergence of an array of fictitious characters drawn for the history of art, Mr Guting is the icon of my socio-cultural perception.  Atemporal and ultimately imprisoned in the world of painting, I use him as a puppet in mise-en-scenes that underscore the content of my work.  As the reflection of my social and artistic reality, however, Mr Gustin also influences me in turn.  A power play therefore takes place between us concerning the content of each piece of work.

The toaster

The toaster is the intermediate between Mr Gustin and me.  It represents a vehicle for contact.  As such, the toaster is a communication tool.  It symbolizes the predominance of communicative over art.  It is a “seal” that certifies the dialectical nature of every work.
